(4) The Clinical Diagnosis of Colic in the Horse

Abstract

SUMMARY Consideration is given to the difficulties associated with the diagnosis of disorders of the gastro‐intestinal tract of horses. The causation of abdominal pain is discussed, and attention given to the clinical examination of the patient. The clinical manifestations of the various forms of “colic” are outlined so as to assist diagnosis, indicate rational therapy, and enable the clinician to give a reasoned prognosis. RÉSUMÉ On considère les difficultés du diagnostic des désordres gastro intestinaux chez le Cheval. Les causes de la souffrance abdominale sont discutées. Des commentaires sont faits sur l'examen clinique du malade. Les manifestations cliniques des diverses formes de coliques sont schématisées afin d'aider au diagnostic, à une thérapeutique rationnelle et afin d'aider le praticien à formuler un pronostic raisonné. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Die Schwierigkeiten der Diagnose gastro‐intestinaler Störungen beim Pferd werden hervorgehoben. Der Autor diskutiert die Ursache der Abdominalschmerzen und unterstreicht die Bedeutung der klinischen Untersuchung. Die klinischen Manifestationen der verschiedenen Kolikformen werden gestreift, um die Diagnosestellung zu erleichtern, eine rationale Therapie aufzuzeigen und dem Kliniker eine begründete Prognose zu ermöglichen.
