A Case of Primary Lymphoid Leukaemia in a Horse

Abstract

SUMMARY Progressive leukaemic changes and a persistent anaemia were demonstrated in the blood of a 7 year old gelding, which had shown early signs of lowered performance and unthriftiness, and later developed dependent oedema and became dull and listless. The total leucocyte count, initially within the normal range although reflecting an absolute lymphocytosis, increased fourfold in 6 days from excessive lymphoid production involving predominantly the more immature cell types; lymphoblasts, prolymphocytes and large lymphocytes. The severity of the condition was confirmed by bone marrow biopsy. RÉSUMÉ Une leucémie progressive et une anémie persistante ont été mis en évidence chez un cheval hongre de 7 ans qui avait montr des signes de mauvaise santé et des contre performances. Plus tard ce cheval devint triste et prostré et manifesta des oedèmes. Le nombre total des leucocytes demeura d'abord dans les limites normales, avec tendance à la lymphocytose. Puis en six jours ce nombre quadrupla, s'augmentant notemment de types immatures: lymphoblastes, prolymphocytes et grands lymphocytes. Le diagnostic fut confirmé par une biopsie. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Im Blut eines 7 jährigen Wallachs konnten progressive leukaemische Veränderungen und eine persistierende Anaemie festgestellt werden. Das Pferd hatte vorher einen Leistungsabfall gezeigt, entwickelte dann Leukoedeme und wurde matt und lustlos. Die Gesamtleukozytenzahl, anfangs im normalen Bereich aber mit absoluter Lymphocytose, stieg innerhalb von sechs Tagen um das Vierfache an. Der Anstieg liess sich zurückführen auf eine excessive Produktion vorwiegend unreifer Zellen: Lymphoblasten, Prolymphozyten und grosse Lymphozyten. Die Ernsthaftigkeit des Zustands konnte durch eine Knochenmarksbiopsie gesichert werden.
