A Case of Spermatic Arteriovenous Anastomosis in the Horse

Abstract

SUMMARY A large anastomosis of the spermatic artery and vein is described. This was found while surgically removing an abdominal testis. Before surgery the animal wanted to rear after exercise and could not stand on 3 legs for any length of time while being shod. This unusual behaviour disappeared after removal of the mass. The performance and conformation of the horse has also greatly improved. RÉSUMÉ On rapporte le cas d'une importante anastomose artério veineuse spermatique chez le cheval. Ceci fut constaté lors d'une opération de cryptorchidie. Avant l'intervention l'animal avait tendance à reculer après l'exercice et pouvait difficilement se tenir sur trois jambes lorsqu'on le ferrait. Ce comportement inhabituel disparut après qu'on eut extirpé la formation pathologique. Les performances et la conformation du cheval s'améliorèrent également d'une appréciable facon. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Eine grosse Anastomose zwischen arteria und vena spermatica wird beschrieben. Die Anastomose wurde anlässlich der Entfernung eines Abdominalhodens bemerkt. Vor dem Eingriff wollte das Pferd steigen nach der Arbeit; es war nicht imstande, wéhrend des Beschlagens längere Zeit auf drei Beinen zu stehen. Diese ungewöhnlichen Befunde verschwanden nach der Operation. Leistung und Aussehen des Pferdes haben sich erheblich verbessert.
