Abstract
While veterinary medicine continues to be known as one of the whitest professions in the United States, laboratory animal medicine as a veterinary specialty is being recognized as a popular career choice for non-white veterinarians. Over 23% of veterinarians working in the laboratory animal medicine specialty today identify as non-white. Looking beyond race, gender diversity has been measured with 33% identifying as male, 65% as female, and 1% as non-binary. Since 2020, the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) has increased its emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging to support its value of respect for all members. This viewpoint article provides historical data, strategy, examples, and guidance to help other veterinary specialties and organizations develop a culture where everyone can thrive and have a true sense of belonging.
