Are there benefits to using a team-based approach to developing balanced anesthesia drug protocols in veterinary practice? Part 1.

Abstract

The persistent underutilization of veterinary technician skills and knowledge is a primary driver of career attrition within 5 to 7 years. Graduates of AVMA-accredited programs are trained in anesthesia and pain management fundamentals, yet their full capabilities are often untapped. The adoption of a team-based approach to anesthesia relies on optimized role delegation to enhance surgical/procedural efficiency and patient safety. A team-based approach integrates credentialed technicians in collaboration with a veterinarian to be involved in the entire anesthesia and analgesia planning and implementation process. This includes but is not limited to preassessment, anesthetic planning, monitoring and management, and transferring of care to discharge. This model not only streamlines workflow but also improves patient care through heightened team engagement.
