Plain-English summary

A study found that canine astroviruses are common in dogs, especially in puppies with stomach issues like vomiting or diarrhea. Puppies showing these gastroenteric signs were more likely to shed the virus compared to healthy dogs. This suggests that astroviruses may play a role in causing gastrointestinal problems in dogs. More research is needed to fully understand how these viruses affect dogs' health.

Abstract

Canine astroviruses appear to be widespread geographically. The prevalence may be significantly higher in pups with gastroenteric disease than in asymptomatic animals and virus shedding has been shown to correlate with gastroenteric signs in naturally infected dogs. Animal experiments are required to understand better the pathogenic role of astroviruses in dogs.
