Original publication title: Bilateral renal dysplasia, hydronephrosis, and hydroureter in a septic neonatal foal.

Species:
horse

Plain-English summary

A 2-week-old Canadian warmblood foal was being treated for a serious joint infection called septic polyarthritis when it was found to have some serious kidney problems. The foal had congenital renal dysplasia (a birth defect where the kidneys don't develop properly), along with hydronephrosis and hydroureter, which means the kidneys were swollen and the tubes leading from the kidneys to the bladder were also affected. During its treatment, the foal experienced occasional abdominal pain, likely due to these kidney issues. Unfortunately, the foal's condition was severe, and the outcome was not successful.

Abstract

A Canadian warmblood foal treated for septic polyarthritis was diagnosed with bilateral congenital renal dysplasia, hydronephrosis, and hydroureter at 2 weeks of age based on abdominal ultrasound and postmortem examination. Intermittent abdominal pain throughout the course of treatment was attributed to hydronephrosis and hydroureter.
