Plain-English summary
A young Oldenburg colt was examined after it sadly passed away just 30 minutes after birth. The colt had a wry nose, which is a deformity of the snout, and its mouth and gums had a bluish color, indicating a lack of oxygen. It also had underdeveloped eyes and a bony growth on the right side of its head. The study looked into the possible causes of these issues by discussing how these body parts normally develop in the embryo. Unfortunately, the treatment or intervention was not applicable since the foal did not survive.
Abstract
An Oldenburg colt with wry nose was autopsied after having lived for only 30 min. It presented cyanotic oral mucosae, underdeveloped eyes and a right-sided temporal osseous mass. The applicable nomenclature for the defects is discussed, and the potential etiopathogenesis is explored by describing the normal embryonic development of the affected body parts.
