Original publication title: Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy Secondary to Hypothyroidism: Review of 3 Clinical Cases

Plain-English summary
A 6-year-old male Doberman was brought in for breathing problems and weakness, which were found to be caused by dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that can occur due to hypothyroidism. The vet treated the dog by stabilizing the thyroid levels, which helped improve the heart function in some cases. While some dogs showed significant recovery, others had lasting heart issues even after treatment. It's important for owners to monitor their pets closely and follow up with their vet for ongoing care.

Abstract
Canine dilated cardiomyopathy is characterized by ventricular systolic dysfunction with eccentric hypertrophy. Can be primary or secondary to other disorders such as hypothyroidism. Different cardiac changes, due to the inotropic and chronotropic alterations, can appear in these patients. Mainly affecting the left ventricle, although both ventricles may be affected. Electrocardiographic alterations may appear, as in the cases described, needing different therapeutic strategies for its control. Many times, we are able to achieve a complete resolution of the cardiac alterations once the hypothyroidism is stabilized, but this is not always possible, leaving permanent alterations.
