Plain-English summary

A 9-year-old Quarter horse was brought in because it had long-lasting pneumonia that didn't get better with treatment. After the horse passed away, a thorough examination revealed several serious issues, including an abscess in the liver, a blood clot in the large vein that carries blood back to the heart, and complications in the lungs due to the clot. This combination of problems is similar to a condition seen in cattle but had not been documented in horses before. Unfortunately, the treatment did not work for this horse, leading to its death.

Abstract

A 9-year-old Quarter horse was presented for chronic refractory pneumonia. On necropsy, an hepatic abscess, caudal vena cava thrombosis, pulmonary thromboembolism, and embolic pneumonia were identified. Similar lesions have been reported in cattle as caudal vena cava thrombosis syndrome, however this syndrome has not previously been reported in horses.
