Original publication title: Closure of Eyelid Margin Incisions in 102 Eyes Using a Double Continuous Suture.

Plain-English summary

A group of 63 dogs and 6 cats underwent eyelid surgery, and their eyelid incisions were closed using a new double-layer continuous suture technique. This method helped create a smooth eyelid margin and was found to be quick and effective. The results showed that the sutures securely closed the incisions while keeping the knots away from the eyelid margin, which is important for healing. Overall, this technique proved to be a successful option for eyelid surgeries in pets.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To report a retrospective study of the outcome of a previously unreported suture pattern for the closure of eyelid margin incisions. ANIMALS STUDIED: Sixty-three canines and six felines. PROCEDURE: The eyelid incisions were closed with a double-layer continuous suture, beginning and finishing at the apex of the incision (i.e., furthest from the eyelid margin), thus positioning the knot at the apex of the incision and distant from the eyelid margin, while still ensuring accurate and secure closure. RESULTS: In this series of 102 eyes of 63 dogs and six cats, the double continuous suture successfully recreated a smooth eyelid margin and was found to be a simple, quick and effective method of closure. CONCLUSIONS: The double continuous eyelid suture accurately and securely closed eyelid incisions involving the eyelid margin, while positioning the knot and suture ends distant from the eyelid margin.
