Plain-English summary
A Standardbred stallion was brought in for surgery to fix an inguinal hernia, which is a type of bulge in the groin area. During the surgery, the veterinarians discovered that he also had nephrosplenic entrapment, where part of the intestine gets trapped near the spleen. They were able to successfully treat both issues during the same operation. This is the first time that these two conditions have been reported happening at the same time in a horse. Overall, the treatment worked well.
Abstract
A stallion presenting for surgical correction of an acquired inguinal hernia was also diagnosed with a nephrosplenic entrapment (NSE) intraoperatively. Surgical intervention resulted in a successful outcome. To date, these conditions have not been reported to occur simultaneously.
