Plain-English summary
A weak German Warmblood filly, born 29 days early, was diagnosed with a cowpox virus infection along with a serious bacterial infection caused by streptococcus. Sadly, she was put to sleep on her sixth day of life due to her poor condition. During the examination after her death, doctors found painful sores in her digestive tract, inflammation of the intestines, joint issues, and kidney problems. Tests confirmed the presence of the cowpox virus in her body. Unfortunately, the treatment options were not effective, leading to her early passing.
Abstract
Cowpox virus infection associated with a streptococcal septicaemia was diagnosed in a weak German Warmblood filly, born 29 days prematurely, and humanely destroyed on the sixth day of life. At necropsy, ulcerative lesions in the alimentary tract, colitis, polyarthritis and nephritis were observed. Transmission electron microscopical examination of specimens from ulcerative lesions revealed typical orthopox virions. Cowpox virus was unequivocally identified by virological and molecular-biological methods.
