Abstract
In mouse myocardial infarction, we combined lineage tracing of cardiac macrophages, mapping their ontogeny, with an analysis of their phenotype and phagocytic functions. While embryo-derived macrophages were most abundant in homeostasis, bone marrow-derived MHC-IImacrophages increased in both numbers and phagocytic capacity to clear necrotic cardiomyocytes early after ischemia/perfusion injury.
