Plain-English summary

A 3-year-old female Morgan horse was very tired and had stopped eating, along with a runny nose, which led veterinarians to suspect she had a serious brain infection called suppurative meningitis. After she passed away, a thorough examination confirmed this diagnosis, revealing an infection caused by a type of bacteria called Actinomyces. This bacteria was found in an abscess near her brain and also in her lungs. Unfortunately, despite the findings, the outcome was not positive, as the horse did not survive.

Abstract

Physical, neurologic, and clinicopathologic findings in a 3-year-old female Morgan horse with anorexia and nasal discharge suggested suppurative meningitis. Necropsy findings substantiated the tentative diagnosis. Actinomyces sp was cultured from a meningeal abscess surrounding the pituitary gland and from resolving lung abscesses.
