Plain-English summary
Nine dogs with itchy skin due to atopic dermatitis (a common allergic skin condition) were given a medication called zileuton to see if it would help. After four weeks, the dogs showed less redness in their skin, but it didn't help with the itching. The dogs tolerated the medication well, although one dog had a slight increase in liver enzymes, which went back to normal after stopping the treatment. More research is needed to confirm these findings and better understand how zileuton can help dogs with atopic dermatitis.

Abstract
AbstractNine dogs meeting the diagnostic criteria for canine atopic dermatitis were enrolled in a double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, cross‐over clinical trial. In this pilot study, zileuton (a 5‐lipoxygenase inhibitor) given orally at 2 mg kg−1three times daily for 4 weeks significantly decreased erythema in dogs with atopic dermatitis but had no effect on pruritus. Zileuton was well tolerated and no adverse clinical signs were noted. However, one dog developed mild alanine aminotransaminase elevation, which resolved within 1 week of discontinuation of therapy. Monitoring of alanine aminotransaminase may be necessary in dogs receiving zileuton. Further studies with larger number of dogs are needed to evaluate the efficacy of zileuton as treatment for canine atopic dermatitis.
