Plain-English summary
A horse was found to have a blockage in its small intestine caused by an 8-centimeter mass of dry, cracked corn, which led to signs of colic, like abdominal pain. The veterinarians were able to carefully move the blockage and then surgically remove it through an opening in the intestine. After the surgery, the horse recovered well, and there were no further issues with the blockage returning.
Abstract
An 8-cm compressed mass of dry cracked corn was found obstructing the duodenum of a horse with signs of colic. The mass was manipulated aborally and removed through jejunal enterotomy. The horse recovered and the impaction did not recur.
