Plain-English summary

A 3-year-old male Thoroughbred horse was examined using an ultrasound of the heart because he had pleuropneumonia, which is an infection affecting the lungs and chest. During this examination, the vets found an intact aneurysm, which is a bulge in a blood vessel, in a specific part of the heart called the right sinus of Valsalva. After the horse passed away, a further examination confirmed the presence of this aneurysm. Interestingly, the horse showed no signs of illness related to the aneurysm itself.

Abstract

Two-dimensional real-time echocardiographic examination of a 3-year-old Thoroughbred gelding with pleuropneumonia revealed an intact aneurysm of the right sinus of Valsalva, which was confirmed at postmortem examination. The horse had no clinical signs associated with the aneurysm.
