Abstract
SUMMARY Studies on cardiac effects in rabbits of crude and partially purified hemolysin derived from Listeria monocytogenes (strain 9-125) were undertaken in perfused isolated hearts, in intact hearts, and with myocardial adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase). Results of isolated heart studies indicated that change in coronary flow evoked by hemolysin was a possible factor in its effect on heart rate. The latent period and the degree of response varied with dosage level, and recorded effects included decreases in heart rate and alterations in rhythm, as well as contractile amplitude. Results of preliminary investigation revealed an in vitro depressant effect on myocardial ATPase.
