Original publication title: Electrocardiographic and echocardiographic evidence of atrial dissociation.

Species:
dog

Plain-English summary

A 4-year-old Boxer was brought to the vet because he wasn't eating well. Tests showed that he had a heart issue called atrial dissociation, where the heart's electrical signals and mechanical functions were out of sync. This condition can be serious, but the vet was able to identify it through an electrocardiogram and an echocardiogram. The dog's treatment plan would depend on the underlying cause of the heart issue, and it's important for pet owners to monitor their pets for any signs of heart problems, like changes in appetite or energy levels.

Abstract

A 4-year-old Boxer dog with a history of ventricular premature contractions was evaluated for anorexia. An electrocardiogram revealed atrial dissociation and an echocardiogram supported simultaneous mechanical atrial systole with the ectopic atrial electrical activity. This case and the supporting images provide further credence to the existence of atrial dissociation.
