Plain-English summary

An 11-year-old mare who was eight months pregnant suddenly had a lot of trouble breathing. A closer look with an endoscope (a tool used to see inside the body) revealed that there was some abnormal tissue in her throat blocking her airway. To avoid putting her under general anesthesia or needing a permanent breathing tube, the veterinarians used a special electrosurgical technique to remove the tissue while she was still standing. After the procedure, her breathing improved, and she was able to give birth without any issues.

Abstract

An 11-year-old, eight-months pregnant mare suddenly developed severe respiratory distress. Endoscopic examination identified intralaryngeal granulation tissue obstructing the airway. In order to avoid general anaesthesia and the problems associated with a permanent tracheostomy, the mass was resected electrosurgically while the mare was standing. Patency was restored to the airway and the mare foaled without complication.
