Plain-English summary

A 12-year-old thoroughbred gelding (a male horse that has been castrated) sadly died after suffering from a type of kidney disease called diffuse global glomerulonephritis, which is when the kidney filters become inflamed and damaged. This occurred three months after he had a lower respiratory infection caused by a bacteria known as Streptococcus zooepidemicus. Tests showed that his kidney issues were linked to an immune response involving antibodies and the streptococcal bacteria. Unfortunately, despite the investigations, the horse did not survive.

Abstract

A 12-year-old thoroughbred gelding died from diffuse global glomerulonephritis, 3 months after a lower respiratory infection from which Streptococcus zooepidemicus was isolated. Immunopathological studies (immunofluorescence, immunodiffusion, immunoperoxidase testing and immunoblotting) indicated the presence of an immune reactant renal disease associated with IgG antibody and streptococcal antigens.
