Plain-English summary
A Canadian adult horse in Saskatchewan was diagnosed with a neurological condition caused by a protozoal parasite called Neospora hughesi. This parasite led to inflammation in the horse's central nervous system, resulting in various neurological signs. Notably, this case is the first recorded instance of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) caused by this specific parasite outside of the United States.
Abstract
A protozoal parasite identified as Neospora hughesi was found in inflammatory lesions in the central nervous system of a Canadian-born adult horse presented with neurological signs. This is believed to be the first case of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) caused by Neospora hughesi in a horse outside of the United States.
