Original publication title: Erythema multiforme associated with zonisamide in a dog.
- Species:
- dog
Plain-English summary
A 5-year-old mixed-breed dog developed skin lesions and redness after starting a medication called zonisamide, which is used to control seizures. The symptoms were consistent with a condition called erythema multiforme, a type of skin reaction that can occur with certain medications. The veterinarian advised caution when prescribing zonisamide, especially for dogs that have had allergic reactions to similar drugs in the past. It's important for pet owners to monitor their dogs for any unusual skin changes when starting new medications.

Abstract
This report describes a dog that developed erythema multiforme in temporal association with administration of the sulphonamide-based anticonvulsant drug zonisamide. Similar adverse drug reactions have been associated with sulphonamide antimicrobial drugs. Caution should be exercised when prescribing this medication for dogs with known hypersensitivity to sulphonamides.
