Abstract
Background : Diabetes mellitus (DM) in cats is commonly seen in primary care practice and presents several clinical and practical challenges to owners and vets. In recent years feline DM has seen paradigm shifts in management and monitoring. Aim of the article : This article, the first of a two‐part series on feline DM, looks at how the pathogenesis differs between cats and dogs. It discusses the diagnosis and treatment options that are available. Part 2 will look at monitoring methods to assist with longer‐term management.
