Original publication title: Health care for pets.

Plain-English summary

The care of pets needs a solid system to improve and grow. Veterinarians who offer specialized care may struggle to provide the best services unless there are financial plans in place to support them. If these veterinarians don't fully charge pet owners for specialist services, it could lead to fewer options for advanced care as more vets enter the field. This situation could also slow down important scientific research related to pet health. Overall, a better structure is essential for ensuring pets receive the care they need.

Abstract

Health care for pets cannot develop satisfactorily without a proper structure. Support for practising veterinarians who provide second- and third-line care will continue to be inadequate unless a structure with built-in financial arrangements is introduced. If practising veterinarians do not pass on the costs of specialist help in full to the owners of pets, this form of service will decrease when the number of veterinarians rises to too high a level. Such a development would also threaten the advance of scientific research with regard to pets.
