Plain-English summary
Three horses were brought in with a type of eye sore called indolent-like corneal ulcers, which can be slow to heal. They were all given antibiotic eye drops to help fight infection. For two of the horses, the edges of their ulcers were thick and needed to be carefully removed using a cotton swab after numbing the area. One of these horses healed after two treatments to clean the ulcer, but the other horse that had surgery experienced some complications. Overall, the treatment worked for one horse, but not without issues for the other.
Abstract
Three horses were admitted with indolent-like corneal ulcers. All horses were treated topically with antibiotics. Two horses had ulcers with redundant epithelial borders, which were debrided with cotton-tipped applicators after topical anesthesia was induced. One ulcer healed after 2 debridements. Of 2 horses treated surgically, one had complications.
