Plain-English summary
In a unique case, a veterinary surgeon developed an infected wound that was found to contain a type of bacteria called Pasteurella caballi. This bacteria was identified through comparison with a known strain and was isolated alongside another bacteria, Escherichia coli. This situation is notable because it likely marks the first time Pasteurella caballi has been found in a human. The findings highlight the importance of understanding how certain bacteria can affect both animals and humans.
Abstract
Comparison of phenotypical characters obtained from the type strain of Pasteurella caballi and a previously unclassified P.sp., isolated from an infected wound on a veterinary surgeon, allowed classification of the P.sp. with P. caballi. The P.sp. was isolated in a mixed culture with Escherichia coli and probably represents the first human isolate of P. caballi.
