Abstract

Lipid disorders, including dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, hepatic lipidosis, and adipocytic tumors are prevalent in psittacine birds and often lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Species-specific predispositions, diet, exercise, and reproductive status play major roles in the development and progression of these conditions. Effective management relies on early diagnosis through lipidologic assays and imaging, alongside comprehensive interventions involving dietary modifications, exercise, and pharmacologic treatments, such as omega-3 fatty acid supplements and lipid-lowering therapeutics. Addressing risk factors tailored to individual species is critical to improving clinical outcomes and ensuring the long-term health and welfare of psittacine birds under human care.
