Plain-English summary

This report talks about a 5-month-old American miniature horse colt that had some unusual problems with its upper airway when it was being prepared for surgery. The colt had dwarfism, which is a condition that can come with various birth defects. Because of these issues, it's important to be very careful when giving anesthesia or strong sedatives to horses of this breed that have multiple congenital (birth-related) abnormalities. The findings suggest that special attention is needed for these types of horses during medical procedures.

Abstract

This report describes previously unreported upper airway abnormalities encountered in a 5-month-old American miniature horse colt presented for elective surgery. Caution should be exercised when administering general anesthesia or heavy sedation to individuals of this breed that present with multiple congenital abnormalities.
