Abstract
Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common heart disease in dogs, and potentially leads to the development of congestive heart failure. This first part of two articles discusses the features of MMVD including prevalence, aetiology and pathophysiology, and also discusses the diagnosis and staging of the condition. The management of MMVD will be discussed in part 2.
