Plain-English summary

A 15-month-old Quarter Horse colt got very sick with a serious lung infection called pneumonia and also had fluid around his lungs, known as pleuritis. Doctors found a type of bacteria called beta-hemolytic streptococcus in a sample taken from his windpipe, but unfortunately, he passed away even after receiving standard treatment. After he died, tests showed that he had another infection caused by a different bacteria called Nocardia brasiliensis in his lungs and nearby lymph nodes. Sadly, despite efforts to treat him, the colt did not survive.

Abstract

A 15 month-old Quarter Horse colt developed severe bacterial pneumonia and effusive pleuritis. A beta-hemolytic streptococcus was isolated from a tracheal wash specimen but the colt died despite conventional therapy. The gross post mortem and histologic lesions were characteristic of pulmonary nocardiosis. Nocardia brasiliensis was isolated from the lung and bronchial lymph node.
