Abstract
Since ancient times, alternative methods of practicing medicine with people and animals have continually evolved and often have been combined with more conventional practice. However, support for such complementary adjunctive practices over these many years has waxed and waned and remains controversial even today. This review summarizes the history and status of what is now termed "integrative medicine" as applied to companion animals and livestock.
