Plain-English summary

A 2-year-old male dog had been struggling with noisy breathing since he was a puppy, and antibiotics didn’t help. After some tests, the vet found that his nasal passages were severely narrowed due to a condition called choanal atresia, which was causing him to have trouble breathing. The owner chose not to pursue surgery, so the vet recommended making some changes to the dog's environment and providing care to help manage his symptoms. The dog is currently living with this condition and has an acceptable quality of life.

Abstract

Abstract A 2‐year‐old, male, intact dog presented with a history of stertorous breathing since infancy, unresponsive to antibiotic therapy. On rostral rigid endoscopy, there were no remarkable findings. However, computed tomography revealed bilateral atresia of the nasal choanae, with focal hyperossification and severe narrowing, with accompanying hypoventilation of the nasopharynx. Retrograde flexible nasopharyngoscopy confirmed the severe partial choanal atresia. Surgical intervention was declined by the owner due to reasonably acceptable quality of life; therefore, only environmental modifications and symptomatic care have been implemented so far.
