Plain-English summary

Pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, is a common and serious condition in dogs, especially in middle-aged and older pets. Certain breeds are more likely to develop this disease, and the symptoms can vary widely, making it hard to diagnose since they can resemble other stomach issues. To accurately diagnose pancreatitis, veterinarians often use a combination of lab tests, imaging, and physical exams. With the right treatment, the risks associated with pancreatitis can be lowered, helping affected dogs recover better.

Abstract

Pancreatitis is one of the most common diseases within the veterinary medical routine. It is considered a severe inflammatory disease, of an acute and / or chronic character, and which is still underdiagnosed due to existing impasses in determining the disease. The animals most affected are dogs, middle-aged and elderly and some breeds may be considered more likely to acquire the condition. Affected patients have varied symptoms, depending on the severity of the disease. The diagnosis can be difficult due to pancreatitis allowing numerous similar symptoms with other gastroenteric diseases. The combined use of diagnoses such as laboratory and imaging tests, in addition to the data collected through physical examination and anamnesis, allow for a systemic analysis of the condition and the choice of therapy. Appropriate therapeutic management can reduce morbidity and mortality in pancreatitis.
