Plain-English summary

Two horses from different farms experienced serious breathing problems during the early summer months for two years in a row. Their symptoms improved when they were moved to different environments, suggesting that their respiratory issues might be caused by an allergy to pollen. Additionally, both horses were found to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which means they had ongoing breathing difficulties related to hay or straw. The treatment of relocating them to new areas worked well in relieving their respiratory distress.

Abstract

Two horses on separate farms developed severe obstructive pulmonary disease in successive years during the early summer months. In both cases clinical remission of the respiratory distress was achieved by moving the animals to different environments. The suggested aetiology for this outdoor chronic respiratory disease is a pulmonary allergy to pollen. Both animals were also shown to suffer from classical chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, i.e., obstructive pulmonary disease in the presence of hay and, or, straw.
