- Species:
- dog
Plain-English summary
A 7-year-old spayed female mixed breed dog was brought to the vet because she was having trouble breathing, seemed very tired, and had a swollen belly. The vet found that she had fluid around her heart, a condition known as pericardial effusion. To treat her, the vet removed the fluid using a procedure called thoracocentesis and another procedure to drain the fluid directly from the heart. After treatment, the dog has been stable and doing better.

Abstract
A 7-year-old, spayed female mixed breed dog was evaluated for labored breathing, lethargy, and a distended abdomen. Pericardial effusion was diagnosed after radiographic and echocardiographic interpretation. Treatment consisted of thoracocentesis and a single pericardiocentesis. Follow-up examinations indicate that the dog's condition has remained stable.
