Plain-English summary
A 2-month-old warmblood filly was brought to the vet because she had a large, soft swelling around her throat and jaw that had been there for a week. The vet found that she had a condition called bilateral guttural pouch tympany, which means there was an abnormal buildup of air in the spaces near her throat. They performed surgery to fix this issue, and while that part went well, she later developed a problem with the muscles in her throat that affected her ability to swallow.
Abstract
A 2-month-old warmblood filly was presented for a 1-week history of a large, nonpainful, fluctuant swelling of the parotid and laryngeal area. Bilateral guttural pouch tympany was diagnosed. Surgical correction resolved the guttural pouch tympany; however, postoperative pharyngeal neuromuscular dysfunction developed.
