Original publication title: Pharyngeal trauma from endotracheal intubation in a colt.
Plain-English summary
A healthy 4 and a half-month-old colt experienced a serious injury to his throat, likely caused by a tube placed in his windpipe for anesthesia during surgery. After the surgery, he developed severe swelling in his neck, inflammation in his chest, and lung infection. Unfortunately, the treatments with antibiotics and supportive care did not help him recover.
Abstract
A pharyngeal performation, probably associated with endotracheal intubation, occurred in a healthy 4 1/2-month-old colt. Inhalation anesthesia was carried out for elective surgery, but acute cervical cellulitis, pleuritis, and pneumonia developed after the surgery. Antibacterial and supportive therapy was ineffective.
