Plain-English summary

This study looked at two adult horses that had kidney problems known as renal dysplasia, which is a condition where the kidneys don’t develop properly. Both horses were also suffering from chronic renal failure, meaning their kidneys were not working well over a long period. The diagnosis was made through a kidney biopsy, and it was later confirmed after the horses passed away. Unfortunately, the horses had a serious complication called severe interstitial pyelonephritis, which is an infection of the kidney. The outcome was not positive, as both horses had significant health issues related to their kidney conditions.

Abstract

Renal dysplasia is reported in two adult horses in chronic renal failure. Renal dysplasia, complicated by severe interstitial pyelonephritis, was diagnosed on renal biopsy and confirmed on post mortem examination.
