Plain-English summary
An 8-month-old colt, which is a mix of Arabian and warmblood breeds, was brought in because he was passing blood in his urine and was very low on red blood cells, indicating severe anemia. The veterinarians found that he had a problem with a blood vessel in one of his kidneys, along with an infection in that kidney. They tried to remove the affected kidney, but the surgery didn't work, and when they examined him after he passed away, they discovered he had a type of blood vessel abnormality called a pseudoaneurysm in the kidney. Unfortunately, the treatment did not succeed.
Abstract
An 8-month-old Arabian-warmblood cross colt was evaluated for overt hematuria. The horse was severely anemic on presentation. A unilateral intrarenal vascular anomaly with unilateral pyelonephritis was diagnosed. Nephrectomy was attempted but was unsuccessful, and postmortem examination demonstrated the presence of an intrarenal pseudoaneurysm.
