Robotic Pets in Hospitals: Fostering Connection.

Abstract

Acute care hospitals often fail to meet the relational needs of older adults with dementia, for whom many environmental stressors can exacerbate behavioral symptoms. Using clinical reflection, we analyzed 2 case studies of robotic pet use in acute care hospitals: individual use of PARO robots (Intelligent System Co) and a communal LOVOT robot (GROOVE X, Inc) café. Both fostered meaningful micromoments of attention and connection, countering patient invisibility and supporting relational and person-centered care. Identified risks, such as infantilization and inequitable access, are addressable through additional staff training and family engagement. Future implementation requires codesigned protocols and sustainable models to ensure robotic pets foster dignity and social connection through thoughtful, ethical integration into routine care.
