Abstract

Correct diagnosis of infection or disease is a hallmark of the quality care that veterinary practitioners must assure pets and clients, and the diagnosis of parasitic diseases is no exception. Whether confirming the diagnosis of infection in pets that present with clinical signs compatible with parasitic disease, or screening companion animals as part of a wider programme of prevention and control, there is a need for accurate and reliable testing methods. Fortunately, science and innovation are not lacking in this field, and the recent development of several new and/or improved diagnostic tests is a reassuring example of how research continues to provide the veterinary practitioner with the right tools. This review highlights some of the more common diagnostic methods available and some of the newer, more recently introduced tests for parasites in companion animals, and provides recommendations for their use.
