Plain-English summary

Five young horses, known as foals, were found to have a specific deficiency in a type of antibody called immunoglobulin M, which was significantly lower than normal levels. All of these foals showed signs of respiratory issues, such as coughing or difficulty breathing. In three of the foals, a type of bacteria called Klebsiella was found in samples taken from their joints, lymph nodes in the chest, or airways. The findings suggest that this antibody deficiency may be linked to their respiratory problems.

Abstract

Selective immunoglobulin M deficiency was diagnosed in 5 foals, on the basis of reduced serum immunoglobulin M concentrations (more than 2 standard deviations below the normal mean). All 5 foals had clinical signs or lesions involving the respiratory tract. Lkebsiella sp was isolated from joint fluids, bronchial lymph nodes, or tracheal washings from the 3 foals in which such samples were available for microbiologic evaluation.
