Plain-English summary

A 13-year-old female domestic shorthair cat was brought to the vet because her left eye looked different. Initially, the vet found a small wound and some early signs of cataracts and inflammation. A year later, the cat returned with severe eye pain, and the vet diagnosed her with serious inflammation and increased pressure in the eye, leading to the decision to remove the eye. Tests revealed that bacteria were present in the lens, confirming a condition called septic lens implantation syndrome. Unfortunately, the cat had to undergo surgery to remove the affected eye due to the severity of the situation.

Abstract

AbstractA 13‐year‐old female spayed domestic shorthair cat was presented initially for a change in the appearance of the left eye. On initial examination, a small penetrating wound was suspected as the cause for a corneal scar, an anterior cortical incipient cataract and mild iritis. The cat was not re‐presented until 1 year later at which time ocular pain was marked. Severe anterior uveitis and glaucoma were diagnosed and the eye enucleated. Histopathology documented intralenticular coccoid bacteria and septic lens implantation syndrome.
