Plain-English summary
A study found that about one in three dogs in Thrissur, India, tested positive for Leptospirosis, a serious bacterial infection. The most common strains detected were L. pomona, L. canicola, and L. icterohaemorrhagiae. This is the first survey of its kind in Kerala, highlighting the importance of including the L. pomona strain in dog vaccines to help protect against this disease. If you're in this area, it's a good idea to discuss your dog's vaccination status with your veterinarian.

Leptospirosis was hither to not surveyed in dogs in Kerala and the prevalence rate of 32.67 per cent in Thrissur is significant The change in epidemiology of leptospirsis in dogs with prevalence to agglutinin to L. pomna in addition to L. canicola and L. icterohaemorrhagiae is highlighted based on this study and hence the need to include L. pomonabacterin in canine vaccines.
