Plain-English summary
A 13-year-old male Percheron horse was brought in because he had a severe blockage in his stomach that wouldn’t go away. After he passed away, a thorough examination revealed a large, mushroom-shaped growth in his stomach that was causing a blockage at the exit. This type of growth, known as an inflammatory polyp, is the first of its kind reported to cause such a problem in horses. Unfortunately, the treatment was not successful since the horse did not survive.
Abstract
A 13-year-old Percheron gelding was presented for refractory gastric impaction. At necropsy a pedunculated 10 cm × 11 cm × 14 cm mass, histologically identified as an inflammatory polyp, was suspected to have been partly obstructing the pylorus. This is the first report of a polyp resulting in gastric outflow obstruction in a horse.
