Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) in the cat is most commonly associated with a combination of insulin resistance and impaired insulin production. A large study confirms the recognised risk factors for DM such as obesity and inactivity, but also demonstrates that feeding a high-carbohydrate dry food to cats with a normal body weight is a risk factor, and that some outdoor access for inactive cats is protective.
