Abstract
Introduction: New and emerging viral diseases are a concern due to their zoonotic potential. The need for disease surveillance in the companion animal sector is reinforced by recent reports of novel orthopoxvirus presentations in dogs and cats, and fatal avian influenza virus infection in cats.
