Abstract
Introduction: There is a need to minimise the use of prophylactic antimicrobial agents in the perioperative setting. With clean surgery the risk of a bacterial infection is very low, but the risk of microbial resistance developing is high. If prophylactic use is necessary it is essential that antimicrobial agents are used appropriately.
